Watts Towers of Simon Rodia
Historic Site · Los Angeles, California
Seventeen interlocking sculptures built by one man, alone, over thirty-three years. Simon Rodia was an Italian immigrant construction worker with no training, no plan, no scaffolding, no welding and no machine tools — he bent steel rods by hand against a rail, wrapped them in mesh and mortar, and studded the surface with broken tile, bottle glass and seashells. The tallest reaches 99 feet.
