Wave Rock
A Fifteen Metre Granite Wave Frozen In Stone Near The Wheatbelt Town Of Hyden, Three And A Half Hours East Of Perth, Striped By Rainwater Mineral Stains And Large Enough To Walk The Full Curved Face Of In A Few Minutes · Hyden, Western Australia
Wave Rock is a fifteen metre wall of granite near the wheatbelt town of Hyden, about three and a half hours east of Perth, carved by weathering into the unmistakable curl of a breaking ocean wave. Vertical stripes of black, orange and grey run down its face, left by rainwater carrying iron and carbonate minerals across the rock over an immense span of time, and the granite itself is part of the ancient Yilgarn Craton, among the oldest rock most visitors will ever stand against. The wave forms one face of a larger outcrop called Hyden Rock, with a low stone wall built along its crest in the 1920s to catch rainwater runoff for the township's water supply. A short trail follows the base and climbs to the flat summit for a view over the wheatbelt's cleared paddocks. Nearby, Mulka's Cave holds one of Western Australia's largest collections of Aboriginal hand stencils, and Hippo's Yawn is a second, smaller rock curiosity close by. It is a genuinely small attraction, seen properly in under an hour - the long drive from Perth is the real commitment, not the rock itself.

Wave Rock itself has no gate and no entry fee, and is viewable at any hour of the day, though there is no lighting at night so a dawn or late afternoon visit gives the clearest light across the stained granite face. The small visitor kiosk and gift shop at the base keep standard daytime hours, roughly 9am to 4pm or 5pm, and close on Christmas Day. The adjoining caravan park, general store and cafe in Hyden keep their own separate hours and some close one afternoon midweek outside school holidays - confirm current hours before relying on a meal stop there. Mulka's Cave, a short drive away, has no gate either and is effectively daylight-hours-only, since there is no path lighting and the track in is uneven and easy to lose after dark.
