Wawa and the Goose

A Small Town Beside Lake Wawa With The Large Wawa Goose, The Nearby Magpie And Michipicoten Rivers, Waterfalls, The Lake Beach At Younghunter Point And Views Of Lake Superior Shores. A Stop On The Long Trans Canada Drive Around The Lake · Wawa, Ontario

Wawa is a small mining and forestry town on Highway 17 on the north-eastern shore of Lake Superior, about 220 km north of Sault Ste. Marie. Its name comes from the Ojibwe word for wild goose, and a giant steel goose beside the highway has greeted drivers on the Trans-Canada route since 1960, making it one of the best-known roadside landmarks in northern Ontario. Iron ore and gold brought the first industry, and the surrounding country is rugged boreal forest cut by the Magpie and Michipicoten rivers, with waterfalls, canoe routes and a handful of sandy beaches on the big lake. Lake Wawa sits at the edge of town, and the great shoreline of Lake Superior Provincial Park lies to the south. Wawa suits a night's stop or a long lunch on the long drive around the lake, with cafes, motels and a friendly small-town pace, and it is a good base for short trips to rivers, falls and lake views for anyone with an extra day.
