Wawayanda State Park

Subnational Park · Hewitt, New Jersey

Around thirty-five thousand acres of forest, lake and swamp in the highlands of Sussex and Passaic counties, close enough to the New York line that the Appalachian Trail crosses it on the way there. WAWAYANDA LAKE is the centre — a clear, cold, spring-fed lake with a swimming beach, boat rental and no petrol engines allowed on it. Around it are the remains of an 1840s iron furnace, a stand of protected old-growth hemlock in the Wawayanda Swamp, about sixty miles of trail, and one of the densest black bear populations in the eastern United States.

885 Warwick Turnpike, Hewitt, New Jersey, 07421, United States

FREE, with free parking at the trailheads and no entrance fee for the trails — open dawn to dusk year round. A seasonal day-use fee applies at the lake area on summer weekends and holidays, where swimming is lifeguarded in season only and boat and kayak rental operates seasonally; NO PETROL ENGINES ARE PERMITTED on Wawayanda Lake. Camping and group sites are reserved online through the New Jersey State Park Service and book well ahead for summer. THIS IS SERIOUS BLACK BEAR COUNTRY — bear-aware food storage is required at campsites and dogs must be kept on a short lead. HUNTING IS PERMITTED ACROSS MUCH OF THE PARK — check the state calendar and wear blaze orange autumn through winter. No potable water on the trails.
