Weeksville Heritage Center

Historic Site · Brooklyn, New York

The surviving houses of WEEKSVILLE, one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America, founded in 1838 by James Weeks and others on land bought outright by Black New Yorkers a decade after New York State abolished slavery. ⚠ THE COMMUNITY WAS SWALLOWED BY BROOKLYN AND FORGOTTEN ENTIRELY — the four HUNTERFLY ROAD HOUSES were rediscovered in 1968 from a light aircraft.

158 Buffalo Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11213, United States

⚠ CHECK THE OPENING DAYS AND BOOK A TOUR — the four Hunterfly Road Houses are shown on guided tours rather than open to wander, and tours run year round but the centre is modestly staffed. ⚠ ADMISSION IS REPORTED AS FREE OR DONATION-BASED for the visitor centre and grounds, with house tours and events possibly ticketed — SOURCES DISAGREE, so check weeksvillesociety.org. ⚠ CONFIRM WHICH HOUSES ARE OPEN: one source notes that some of the Hunterfly Road structures may be undergoing restoration, and the houses are the reason to visit. ⚠ The centre came close to closing in 2020 and is operating.
