Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign

Roadside Sign Designed By Betty Willis (1959); Listed On The National Register Of Historic Places · Las Vegas, Nevada

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is the diamond-shaped roadside sign that has greeted drivers arriving from the south along Las Vegas Boulevard since 1959. Designed by the commercial artist Betty Willis for a local sign company, it spells WELCOME one letter to a white circle, often said to evoke silver dollars, over the words 'to Fabulous' in script and LAS VEGAS in large red letters, with NEVADA below and a pointed star on top. Willis never copyrighted the design, which is why it appears on countless mugs, magnets and replicas. The original stands in the median of the boulevard just south of Mandalay Bay, outside the city limits in unincorporated Clark County, with a small parking lot and a walkway so that visitors can stand in front of it, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is free, lit at night and open around the clock. Expect a queue for the classic photo, costumed Elvises working for tips and, above all, heavy traffic on both sides that you must never cross on foot.

5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89119, United States

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the sign stands on public land and is open and free 24 hours a day, every day, with no gate or staff; it is lit after dark. The median parking lot is usually open around the clock but can be closed for repairs, events or road works, and the boulevard is sometimes closed around it for New Year's Eve and the Grand Prix. The traps that ruin a visit are arriving at midday on a summer weekend into a full lot and a long queue in 110 F heat, missing the turn into the lot, and trying to reach the sign on foot across the traffic lanes. Confirm current conditions before relying on them.
