Grand Victorian Resort Hotel Of 1874 On New Castle Island At The Mouth Of Portsmouth Harbor, Where The Russian And Japanese Delegates Stayed During The 1905 Peace Talks; Closed In The 1980s And Nearly Demolished, Then Restored And Reopened In The Early 2000s Under A Major Hotel Brand. · New Castle, New Hampshire

A white Victorian grand hotel with red mansard roofs and towers, standing on a rise on the island town of New Castle at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor, with the Atlantic on one side and Little Harbor on the other. It opened in 1874 and grew into one of the great summer resort hotels of the New England coast. In 1905, when President Theodore Roosevelt brought Russia and Japan together to end their war, the two delegations stayed here while the talks went on at the naval shipyard across the harbor, and the hotel hosted receptions for them. The hotel declined after the Second World War, closed in the 1980s and sat empty for years, with its roofs failing and demolition planned, before local campaigners and new owners saved it. It was restored and reopened in the early 2000s and is now run under a major hotel brand (confirm). Today it has about 160 rooms and suites (confirm), a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, a marina across the road and restaurants, with wide views of the harbor mouth, the lighthouse and the open sea.

The spa is open daily by appointment. The marina operates mainly from spring to autumn, with transient slips in summer, and is quiet in winter. Private weddings and events can close rooms and lawns on summer and autumn weekends. Non-guests are welcome in the restaurants but not in the pools or guest areas.
