West Hawk Lake is a deep, almost circular lake and small resort community in Whiteshell Provincial Park, beside the Trans-Canada Highway about 150 km east of Winnipeg and not far from the Ontario border (confirm distance). Geologists say the basin was formed by a meteorite that struck about 100 million years ago, which makes it a rare crater lake in the Canadian Shield, and at roughly 115 m it is the deepest lake in Manitoba (confirm figures). The water is clear and cold, the shoreline is a mix of rock, forest and cottages, and a sandy beach, a campground, a boat launch and a few cafes and shops serve summer visitors. Scuba divers train here because of the depth and clarity, anglers fish for lake trout and walleye, and families come for the sandy shallows and the highway-side convenience. The lake is beautiful and also deep and cold, and the traffic of the Trans-Canada runs close by. Winter is quiet, with ice fishing and snowmobiles (confirm all prices, hours and dates).

West Hawk Lake is an open public shore, so the beach and the lakeside paths can be reached at any hour, and the best use is in daylight from late May to early September. The park permit office, the campground, the boat launch, the cafes, the dive services and the shops keep their own hours, which run longer from the May long weekend to Labour Day and shorten or close in winter, so confirm before you drive. Lifeguard cover and beach washrooms are seasonal and may run only on warm weekends. Parking near the beach fills quickly on hot July days, and the highway shoulder is no place to leave a car.
