West Virginia State Capitol
Historic Site · Charleston, West Virginia
Cass Gilbert's last major building, finished in 1932 on the Kanawha River at Charleston after the previous two capitols burned. Its gold-leafed dome rises 292 feet — taller than the dome on the United States Capitol — and the rotunda hangs a two-ton Czech crystal chandelier on a chain fifty-four feet long. Entry, the grounds and the guided tour are all free.

Building open weekdays during business hours; free guided tours on a published weekday schedule. Closed at weekends and on state holidays. Grounds open at all times and the dome is floodlit at night. Free.
