West Virginia State Museum

History Museum · Charleston, West Virginia

The state museum, in the Culture Center on the Capitol grounds at Charleston, rebuilt in 2009 as a single chronological walk from the Appalachian seabed through the frontier, the Civil War separation from Virginia, the coal camps and the twentieth century. It is a sequence of built environments rather than a hall of cases — you walk through a mine portal, a company store and a railway carriage — and it is free.

1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, West Virginia, 25305, United States

Open on a published weekly schedule during daytime hours — not seven days a week, and closed on state holidays. Check before travelling. FREE admission. Mountain Stage recordings in the same building are ticketed separately.
