Western Brook Pond
A Sight Inside Gros Morne National Park (A World Heritage Site, Listed Under Its Own Row): A Landlocked Fjord With 600 M Cliffs And Waterfalls, Reached By A Walk And A Boat Tour Along Its 16 Km Length. One Of The Most Dramatic Landscapes In Eastern Canada, With A Short Summer Season For The Boats · Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador
Western Brook Pond is a landlocked freshwater fjord in Gros Morne National Park on the west coast of Newfoundland, about 25 km north of Rocky Harbour, cut by glaciers and later separated from the sea as the land rose. Cliffs rise about 600 m on either side of a deep, dark, cold lake roughly 16 km long, with waterfalls falling from the plateau above and almost no sign of people beyond the boat. Visitors reach it by a walk of about 3 km each way over boardwalk and bog from the highway trailhead, then take a guided boat tour along the fjord, which runs only in the short summer season. The park is a World Heritage Site, and the pond lies inside its boundary. It is among the most dramatic landscapes in eastern Canada, so plan the day around the boat schedule, book ahead, and dress for wind, cold and changing weather. Fog can hide the cliffs, and a clear day is a gift. Allow most of a day for the walk and the cruise together.

The trailhead and the walk are open at any hour in daylight, but the boat tours that make the visit run only in the short summer season, roughly June to September or early October, with a few departures a day that change by year - confirm times and book ahead. Boats may cancel for wind, fog or low demand, and the first and last sailings of the season are the least certain. The Gros Morne visitor centre at Rocky Harbour keeps its own seasonal hours and can advise on conditions. Outside the boat season the fjord can only be seen from the trail, and winter access is limited to experienced users, so confirm services before driving out.
