Western Maryland Scenic Railroad
Industrial Heritage · Cumberland, Maryland
A sixteen-mile heritage line from Cumberland up to Frostburg on the old Western Maryland Railway grade, climbing through the Narrows and round Helmstetter's Curve into the Alleghenies. Its locomotive No. 1309 is a Baldwin 2-6-6-2 Mallet built in 1949 — the last steam locomotive Baldwin ever built for an American railroad — which was rebuilt over years and returned to service. Whether it or a diesel is on the front of your train depends entirely on the day, and that is worth checking.
13 Canal Street, Cumberland, Maryland, 21502, United States
⚠ SEASONAL AND BOOKED PER DEPARTURE — the season runs roughly May to December with a limited schedule outside summer, and the round trip is about 3.5 hours. STEAM OPERATION IS NOT GUARANTEED ON ANY GIVEN DATE; diesels cover the service when locomotive No. 1309 is under maintenance, so CONFIRM THE LOCOMOTIVE FOR YOUR DATE if steam is the reason for the trip. Autumn colour weekends and Christmas services sell out months ahead. Departs from the restored Western Maryland station at Cumberland, which is also the C&O Canal park visitor centre.
