Whanganui and the River Road

A Heritage River City At The Mouth Of The Whanganui River, Reached Inland By The Whanganui River Road'S Winding Historic Drive Past Maori Settlements And The Abandoned Bridge To Nowhere, With The Durie Hill Elevator Tunnelling Up To A Memorial Tower View Over The Town · Whanganui, Manawatu-Whanganui

Whanganui is a heritage river city at the mouth of the Whanganui River, its Victorian-era streetscape shaped by its past as a river port. The city's best-known landmark is the Durie Hill elevator, an underground lift built in 1919 that tunnels up through the hillside to a tall memorial tower giving a wide view over the city, the river mouth and, on a clear day, distant inland mountains. From Whanganui, the Whanganui River Road follows the river upstream on a narrow, winding historic route past small Maori settlements, old mission churches and riverside marae, one of the North Island's most scenic back roads. Further upriver, past where the sealed road ends, lies the Bridge to Nowhere, a concrete bridge built in the 1930s for a soldier settlement scheme that never got its promised road, now reached only by jet boat, on foot, or by kayak or canoe. The Whanganui River itself, one of New Zealand's longest navigable rivers, was granted legal personhood under New Zealand law in 2017 as Te Awa Tupua, recognized as a living whole from the mountains to the sea.

The Durie Hill elevator operates on a standard daily timetable through most of the week, typically opening mid-morning and closing by early evening, with a small return fare and reduced hours on some public holidays - confirm the current timetable before relying on it. The memorial tower above it is reached on foot from the elevator's upper exit and has no separate gate. The Whanganui River Road itself is open at all hours and free to drive, though it has no street lighting and is best driven in daylight, particularly on its narrower, winding upper stretches. Jet boat trips to the Bridge to Nowhere run to a seasonal daytime timetable set by individual operators from Pipiriki, generally reduced or suspended outside the warmer months and after heavy rain raises the river - confirm current departures directly before planning a day around one.
