Wheaton Arts and the Museum of American Glass

Specialty Museum · Millville, New Jersey

A sixty-acre arts campus in Millville holding THE LARGEST COLLECTION OF AMERICAN GLASS IN THE WORLD — around twenty thousand objects tracing three centuries of it — and, more to the point, A WORKING GLASS FACTORY WHERE YOU WATCH IT BEING BLOWN. South Jersey was the American glass industry: the sand was right, the Pine Barrens supplied the fuel, and Millville was making bottles and windows when most of the country was importing them. The museum is serious scholarship and the hot shop is theatre, and the two together are why this is worth the drive into Cumberland County.

1000 Village Drive, Millville, New Jersey, 08332, United States

Modest admission covering the museum, the studios and the glassblowing demonstrations, with reductions and free entry for members; no booking needed for general entry. LIVE GLASSBLOWING RUNS TO A POSTED DAILY SCHEDULE — get the times at the door and build the visit around them. MAKE-YOUR-OWN GLASS SESSIONS ARE BOOKED SEPARATELY AND IN ADVANCE, cost extra and fill at weekends and in summer. CHECK THE OPENING DAYS AND SEASON BEFORE TRAVELLING: Wheaton Arts closes on some weekdays, reduces hours substantially in winter and has closed entirely for parts of the cold months in some years — and it is an hour from Philadelphia in rural Cumberland County. Free parking. The grounds are free to walk.
