Wheeling Suspension Bridge
Historic Bridge · Wheeling, West Virginia
A suspension bridge of 1849 across the eastern channel of the Ohio River, built by Charles Ellet Jr. with a main span of just over a thousand feet — the longest suspension span in the world when it opened. It carried the National Road west, blew down in a windstorm in 1854 in one of the formative failures of American engineering, and was rebuilt and strengthened rather than replaced. It is a National Historic Landmark and it is still standing where it was put.
