Whisky a Go Go
Music Venue · West Hollywood, California
Whisky a Go Go is a small rock club at 8901 Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. It opened in 1964 - confirm - and is remembered for the suspended dancing cages that gave the phrase go-go dancing its currency, and for The Doors, who were the house band here in 1966 until the owners fired them. Over the decades a long line of rock and metal bands played the stage early in their careers, and the club is often described as a rite of passage for Los Angeles bands. It is still a working venue rather than a museum: most nights bring a bill of local and touring acts, with a few hundred people packed into one low-ceilinged room, standing, loud and close to the stage. Tickets are sold per show - confirm - and age limits differ from one show to the next. There are no tours. Parking on the Strip is tight and costly, so most people arrive by ride share. The Rainbow Bar and Grill is next door.

Whisky a Go Go is a night venue and is not open for walk-in sightseeing during the day. Doors usually open in the early evening, commonly around 7 PM, with the first band on soon after and the last act finishing around midnight, but every show sets its own door time, running order and curfew, so confirm on the venue listing for your date. Many nights have several bands on one bill, and the headliner often plays last and late. Some nights are dark, and private hires or special events can replace a normal show. The age limit is set per show - confirm - and the door staff enforce it. There is no re-entry once you leave, so plan your meal and your ride before you go in. Weekend nights sell out earlier than weeknights.
