Whistling Straits and The American Club

Resort Area · Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Two miles of Lake Michigan bluff in Sheboygan County that Pete and Alice Dye reshaped in the 1990s into a links course on the Irish model, complete with a flock of Blackface sheep and around a thousand bunkers nobody has ever successfully counted. It hosted the PGA Championship in 2004, 2010 and 2015 and the 2021 Ryder Cup, where the United States beat Europe 19-9, the largest margin of the modern era. It is public-access resort golf rather than a private club, run out of The American Club at Kohler, a 1924 Tudor Revival building put up by the Kohler company as a dormitory for its immigrant workers and now a five-star hotel.

N8501 County Road LS, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, 53083, United States

The American Club, spa, restaurants and Kohler Design Center are open year-round. The golf courses are seasonal, roughly April or May to October depending on weather, and close for the winter. Tee times are booked through Destination Kohler, with priority for resort guests.
