Whitaker Point (Hawksbill Crag)
A Sandstone Overhang In The Upper Buffalo Wilderness Of The Ozark National Forest, And The Most Photographed Natural Feature In Arkansas. · Ponca, Arkansas
Hawksbill Crag is a beak of sandstone jutting out of a bluff above the Whitaker Creek valley, and it is the photograph that represents Arkansas - on tourism posters, book covers and roughly every Ozark calendar ever printed. The walk in is about three miles there and back from a gravel road on Cave Mountain, easy enough that people arrive in trainers, which is part of the problem: the crag is an unguarded overhang with a long drop and people have died on it taking pictures. It sits inside the Upper Buffalo Wilderness, so there are no rails, no signs at the edge and no facilities of any kind. It is free, it is busy at weekends, and it is best in fog at sunrise.
