White Horse Hill National Game Preserve
Wildlife Reserve · St. Michael, North Dakota
A small federal preserve of wooded hills and prairie on the south shore of Devils Lake, inside the Spirit Lake Nation, holding fenced herds of bison and elk and one of the more reliable prairie dog towns in the state. It was created in 1904 and was called Sullys Hill until 2019, when it was renamed at the request of the Spirit Lake Tribe - Alfred Sully led the campaign that produced the Whitestone Hill massacre, and the Nation did not want his name on it. A four-mile auto tour road runs through the enclosure.
2107 Park Drive, St. Michael, North Dakota, 58370, United States
FREE and open daily, generally dawn to dusk. ⚠ THE FOUR-MILE AUTO TOUR ROAD IS SEASONAL AND GATED - it is generally open from spring through autumn and closed in winter and during bad weather, while the entrance area and trails may stay open. The visitor and nature centre keeps limited seasonal hours. The preserve lies within the Spirit Lake Nation; observe posted closures. The Fish and Wildlife Service publishes the address as 2107 Park Drive, St. Michael, while the preserve ground itself reverse-geocodes to the Fort Totten district a few miles away - follow the highway signs rather than a satnav pin.
