A national forest of roughly 750,000 acres covering most of the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire and a small corner of western Maine, and one of the most visited national forests in the country, within a day's drive of tens of millions. It was among the first eastern forests bought back under the Weeks Act of 1911, after clear-cutting and fires had stripped the slopes, and was proclaimed in 1918. Today it holds the highest mountains in the Northeast, including the Presidential Range, six designated wildernesses, more than a thousand miles of hiking trail including a long section of the Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Mountain Club's chain of high mountain huts, around twenty drive-in campgrounds, and rivers, notches and ponds between them. Hikers come for the 48 peaks over 4,000 feet and the Presidential Traverse; families for waterfalls, swimming holes and campgrounds; skiers for several resorts on forest land. The weather above treeline is some of the most dangerous in North America, and the forest's rules on camping and parking are stricter than many visitors expect.
