White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad

International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark; Heritage Railway Built 1898 1900 · Skagway, Alaska

A narrow-gauge railway built from Skagway over White Pass in 1898-1900, during the Klondike Gold Rush, to carry prospectors and freight toward the Yukon. Construction crews blasted through granite in brutal cold, and the line climbs nearly 3,000 feet in about 20 miles on grades of almost 4 per cent, past waterfalls, trestles, tunnels and Dead Horse Gulch, where thousands of pack animals died on the old trail. It is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and today runs as a heritage excursion railway in the cruise season. The classic White Pass Summit Excursion takes about three hours round trip. In 2026 it cost about $165 for adults, or $155 when booked online at least 24 hours ahead. Longer trips cross into Canada and require a passport.

231 2nd Avenue, Skagway, Alaska, 99840, United States

Excursions run from about May to September, timed around cruise-ship schedules, with several departures on busy days (check wpyr.com for the 2026 timetable).
