Whiteface Mountain
Mountain Peak · Wilmington, New York
At 4,867 feet the fifth-highest peak in New York and the only High Peak with a road to the top — the VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY, built as a Depression works project and opened in 1935, which climbs to a car park just below the summit where a TUNNEL AND A LIFT CUT INTO THE MOUNTAIN carry you the last 27 storeys. It held the alpine events of the 1980 Winter Olympics and has the greatest vertical drop of any ski area in the eastern United States.
5021 Route 86, Wilmington, New York, 12997, United States
⚠ TWO SEPARATE OPERATIONS ON TWO SEPARATE ROADS. The VETERANS MEMORIAL HIGHWAY toll road from Route 431 above Wilmington is SEASONAL and closes for the winter; the CLOUDSPLITTER GONDOLA from the ski base on Route 86 runs in summer and ski season on its own schedule. The ski area operates roughly December to April. ⚠ THE SUMMIT IS FREQUENTLY IN CLOUD — check the webcam before paying the toll. Everything closes without notice in high wind or ice. ⚠ NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
