Whiteshell Provincial Park is the main summer playground for Winnipeg, about 2,700 square km of Canadian Shield lakes, pine and granite on the Ontario border, roughly 1.5 hours east. It suits families, paddlers, cottagers, campers and anyone who wants a lake weekend without a long drive. Falcon Lake townsite has the beach, shops and a summer buzz; West Hawk Lake fills an ancient crater and is deep and cold; Caddy Lake has railway tunnels you can paddle through when conditions are calm. The Alfred Hole Goose Sanctuary and many hiking trails add quieter options, and the Whiteshell Petroforms are a separate stop nearby. Be honest about the crowds: long weekends fill beaches and campgrounds, and summer water can carry blue-green algae advisories. Black bears live here. A day trip works, but two or three days is better. Confirm the current Manitoba park pass and which rentals are open before you go.

Large Canadian Shield park of lakes, forest and granite outcrops on the Ontario border east of Winnipeg, with Falcon Lake townsite, West Hawk Lake, Caddy Lake and the Trans-Canada Highway through the north, Falcon Lake, Manitoba, Canada

The park itself is open all year, but most services are seasonal. Beaches, campgrounds, rentals, restaurants and the Falcon Lake townsite are busiest from the May long weekend to Labour Day, with shorter hours in spring and fall. Canoe rentals for Caddy Lake and similar services run in summer and usually close by early autumn; confirm operator hours and dates before you drive out. In winter the park has skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing, but many shops, rentals and campgrounds are closed and roads may be icy. Trail access depends on weather and trail conditions. The Trans-Canada Highway through the north of the park is open all year.
