Whitman Mission National Historic Site

Historic Site · Walla Walla, Washington

The site of the Presbyterian mission Marcus and Narcissa Whitman established among the Cayuse in 1836, and of the killings in November 1847 in which the Whitmans and eleven others died - an event that triggered the Cayuse War and was used to justify decades of what followed. The mission buildings are gone; what remains is their outline in the grass, the Oregon Trail ruts, a hilltop memorial and a mass grave. The park has spent recent years rebuilding its interpretation with the Cayuse and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla.
