Whitney Museum of American Art

Art Museum · New York, New York

Founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney after the Metropolitan Museum refused her gift of some five hundred works by living American artists. It moved in 2015 into a Renzo Piano building at the foot of the High Line in the Meatpacking District, with stacked outdoor terraces facing the Hudson, and it runs the Whitney Biennial — the longest-running survey of contemporary American art in the country.
