Whitsunday Islands and Airlie Beach
A Scatter Of 74 Continental Islands Off The Central Queensland Coast, Sailed From Airlie Beach Or Hamilton Island, Holding Whitehaven Beach'S Silica Sand And The Great Barrier Reef'S Inner Fringing Reefs Without Being The Outer Reef Itself · Airlie Beach, Queensland
The Whitsundays are 74 continental islands scattered off the central Queensland coast, sailed from Airlie Beach or flown to via Hamilton Island's own airport. Unlike coral atolls, these are the drowned peaks of an old coastal mountain range, covered in eucalypt forest down to white sand. Whitehaven Beach, a seven kilometre crescent of near-pure silica sand on Whitsunday Island, is the group's signature sight, best seen from the Hill Inlet lookout where an incoming tide swirls sand and turquoise water into shifting patterns. Day boats run from Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island to Whitehaven and a handful of snorkel sites on the inner fringing reef, while liveaboard sailing trips of two to three nights cover more ground and reach quieter anchorages. This is deliberately not the outer Great Barrier Reef - the inner reef here is patchier and more weather-affected, a different and gentler experience from the reef wall further offshore. Airlie Beach is a low-rise resort strip with its own tidal-free swimming lagoon, built around getting people out onto the water the next morning.

There are no gates or fixed opening hours for the islands or Whitehaven Beach itself, since they are public reserve and ocean, reachable only by boat. Day boat tours from Airlie Beach typically depart mid-morning and return mid-afternoon, with exact times depending on the operator and tide. The Hamilton Island ferry and seaplane run to a timetable that changes with the season. Airlie Beach's lagoon and foreshore are open around the clock and free to use. Liveaboard sailing trips run multi-day fixed itineraries booked in advance, not a drop-in activity.
