Two adjoining northwest-side neighbourhoods that were the centre of Chicago's independent music and literary scene through the 1990s — Liz Phair, the Smashing Pumpkins, Urge Overkill and Nelson Algren all worked out of these blocks. The record shops, bookshops and Victorian workers' cottages survived the gentrification that followed, which is more than most such districts manage.
