Wilbur D. May Museum and Arboretum

Museum Of The Travel Collections Of Rancher And Philanthropist Wilbur D. May, With An Arboretum And Botanical Garden In Rancho San Rafael Regional Park · Reno, Nevada

The Wilbur D. May Center sits in Rancho San Rafael Regional Park on the north side of Reno and combines two quite different things: a small museum built around the travel collections of Wilbur D. May, a rancher, pilot and philanthropist from the family behind the May department stores, and an arboretum and botanical garden that shows what will grow in Reno's dry, high-desert climate. The museum is often described as holding big-game trophies from his African safaris, Asian art and carvings, curiosities from decades of world travel and a recreation of rooms from his Reno ranch house. The arboretum spreads across landscaped grounds beside it, with a rose garden, xeric and native plant gardens, ponds, groves and themed plots, and is generally free to walk. In summer a children's area, the Great Basin Adventure, has operated beside it. It is a local attraction, pleasant for a morning, and best combined with the park's trails, the University of Nevada campus and Downtown Reno; the park also hosts the Great Reno Balloon Race each September.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the arboretum and the park are open daily from roughly dawn or early morning to dusk; the museum keeps daytime hours of roughly 10 am to 5 pm on the days it opens, which have not always included every weekday; and the Great Basin Adventure opens only in summer, on limited days. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a day the museum is closed, walking the gardens in the heat of a July afternoon, expecting the Great Basin Adventure in spring or autumn, visiting the rose garden out of season, and driving in on Great Reno Balloon Race morning without knowing about the traffic and parking plan. Confirm current times before relying on them.
