Wildwood and the Doo Wop Motel District

Neon District · Wildwood, New Jersey

Three boroughs on one barrier island — North Wildwood, Wildwood and Wildwood Crest — holding THE LARGEST CONCENTRATION OF MID-CENTURY MOTEL ARCHITECTURE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. About fifty survive of the three hundred-odd built in the 1950s and 60s: plastic palm trees, boomerang roofs, kidney pools, and neon signs saying Caribbean and Satellite and Bel Air. Preservationists coined the term DOO WOP for the style here in the 1990s because nobody had a name for it. THE BEACH IS FREE, which almost no Jersey Shore town can say, and it is a quarter of a mile wide because the sand keeps accreting.

Ocean Avenue, Wildwood, New Jersey, 08260, United States

A public boardwalk and town, free to walk at all hours, and THE BEACH IS FREE — one of very few Jersey Shore towns that does not sell beach tags. The neon districts of Wildwood Crest are a public street, best after dark, and cost nothing. MOST OF THE PIERS, RIDES AND FRONTAGE ARE SEASONAL and largely shut from about October to April. Morey's Piers sells wristbands or individual tickets with height restrictions strictly enforced at each ride. The Sightseer Tram Car runs the boardwalk for a few dollars. Lifeguards in summer only, and the beach is a quarter of a mile wide. Barrier island evacuation orders apply in hurricane season.
