Will Rogers Memorial Museum

Will Rogers Memorial Museum, Oklahoma Historical Society Affiliated; Opened 1938 · Claremore, Oklahoma

The museum of Oklahoma's most famous son, on a hilltop in Claremore that Will Rogers bought in 1911 intending to retire there, opened in 1938 three years after he died in an aeroplane crash in Alaska. Rogers was a Cherokee Nation citizen from Oologah who became a rope-trick vaudeville act, then a newspaper columnist read by forty million people, then the highest-paid film star in Hollywood, and he did it while poking fun at bankers, senators and himself. Nine galleries hold his saddles, ropes, film clips, cartoons, the Jo Davidson statue and his own words on the walls; a children's gallery teaches rope tricks; and the sunken garden holds the tomb where he, his wife Betty and their children are buried. The Dog Iron Ranch, his birthplace, is twelve miles away at Oologah.
