Willamette Falls
Waterfall · West Linn, Oregon
A horseshoe waterfall 1,500 feet wide and about 40 feet high on the Willamette River between Oregon City and West Linn, and the largest waterfall in the Pacific Northwest by volume - the seventeenth widest in the world. It has been a fishing site for Chinook, Clackamas and other peoples for thousands of years, it powered the first long-distance electrical transmission in the United States in 1889, and for a century it was hidden behind a paper mill. The mill closed in 2011 and public access is being rebuilt.
4800 Mill Street, West Linn, Oregon, 97068, United States
The public viewpoints are FREE and open at all times. ⚠ THIS IS NOT YET A FINISHED ATTRACTION - the paper mill that hid the falls for a century closed in 2011 and public access to the site is being rebuilt in stages by the Willamette Falls Legacy Project, so what is open changes; check the current status before travelling. ⚠ FLOW IS SEASONAL AND THE DIFFERENCE IS LARGE: December to April the falls are in flood, and by late summer they can be reduced to channels over exposed rock. The Willamette Falls Locks alongside have been closed to navigation since 2011.
