Willapa National Wildlife Refuge
Wildlife Reserve · Ilwaco, Washington
Around 17,000 acres scattered around Willapa Bay on the southwest Washington coast - saltmarsh, mudflat, dune, and the largest remaining stand of coastal old-growth western red cedar of its kind, on Long Island, reachable only by boat. Willapa Bay is one of the cleanest estuaries in the United States and produces a substantial share of the country farmed oysters. This is a working, quiet, weather-beaten place rather than a scenic destination, and it gets a fraction of the visitors of the coast a few miles west.
