William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Park
Presidential Library And Museum, Opened 2004, Operated By The National Archives And Records Administration. Building By The Polshek Partnership, Cantilevered Over The Arkansas River. Holds One Of The Largest Archival Collections Of Any Presidential Library. · Little Rock, Arkansas
The Clinton Presidential Center is a long glass and steel box cantilevered out over the Arkansas River, and the shape is not an accident - the architects were told to build a bridge to the twenty-first century and took the brief literally. Inside is the National Archives' record of the Clinton presidency, one of the largest archival collections any president has left, presented as a timeline of eight years along a two-storey hall with alcoves for the arguments of the period. There are full-scale reproductions of the Oval Office and the Cabinet Room, a presidential limousine, and a wall of the gifts foreign governments send. Outside, thirty acres of park run along the river and the old 1899 railway bridge next door has been converted into a pedestrian crossing, which makes the site a link in Little Rock's river trail as much as a museum. The River Market district and the city's restaurants start at the other end of the car park.
