Wilmington Riverfront
Redeveloped Waterfront District Of Former Shipyards And Industrial Land Along The Christina River In Wilmington, With A Public Riverwalk, Museums, A Ballpark And A Marsh Wildlife Refuge · Wilmington, Delaware
The Wilmington Riverfront is the stretch of the Christina River just south of downtown Wilmington where shipyards, railcar works and warehouses once lined the water. Since the late 1990s it has been rebuilt into a district of apartments, offices, restaurants and attractions strung along the Riverwalk, a paved promenade a little over a mile long that follows the north bank. At the downtown end is Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park, which remembers Harriet Tubman and the Quaker abolitionist Thomas Garrett, whose Wilmington home was a key stop on the Underground Railroad. Along the way are the Delaware Children's Museum, the Chase Center event hall in old industrial buildings and Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks minor league baseball team. At the south end a boardwalk leads out over the tidal marsh of the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge from the DuPont Environmental Education Center. The Amtrak station is a short walk away. It is a pleasant, modest place to spend an afternoon, busiest on game nights and summer weekends and very quiet on winter weeknights.
Justison Street and the Riverwalk, Wilmington, Delaware, 19801, United States
The Riverwalk itself is a public promenade with no gate and no ticket, so you can walk it at any hour, but it is lit and busy only in parts, and most people treat it as a daylight and early evening walk. Everything along it keeps its own schedule. The Delaware Children's Museum is a paid, indoor attraction that opens during the day and closes on some weekdays, with extra hours around school holidays; confirm before you drive. The DuPont Environmental Education Center building has kept limited days, often closed early in the week, while the marsh boardwalk and trails have generally been open longer hours and free; confirm current days. Wilmington Blue Rocks baseball runs roughly April to early September, with most games in the evening and some weekend afternoon games, and the district fills and parking fills on game nights. The Chase Center holds conventions, concerts and private events on its own calendar, which can close nearby lots. Restaurants mostly serve lunch and dinner, a few close on Mondays, and outdoor decks run only in the warm months. On winter weeknights the district is very quiet and some places close early. Parking is in decks, surface lots and on metered streets, some free on weekends; confirm the rules posted at each lot.
