Wilson's Creek National Battlefield

Battlefield · Republic, Missouri

The ground outside Republic where, on 10 August 1861, Confederate forces under Benjamin McCulloch and Sterling Price beat a smaller Union army under Nathaniel Lyon in the first major engagement of the Civil War west of the Mississippi. Lyon was killed and the Union retreated, but the Confederates could not follow it up, and Missouri stayed in the Union. A five-mile loop road runs the field, the 1852 Ray House still stands where it served as a Confederate field hospital, and Bloody Hill is where it ended.

6424 West Farm Road 182, Republic, Missouri, 65738, United States

Grounds and the tour road generally open daily from early morning to dusk; the visitor centre keeps shorter hours, usually 8 AM to 5 PM, and closes on some federal holidays. The Ray House is open on a limited seasonal schedule and is often shut when the rest of the park is open. A modest entrance fee applies per vehicle. Check nps.gov/wicr for the Ray House schedule specifically.
