Wilsons Promontory

The Southernmost Point Of Mainland Australia, A Granite Peninsula Of Beaches, Boulder Headlands And Rainforest Gullies That Victorians Simply Call The Prom, With Overnight Hiking The Only Way To Reach Its Best Beaches · Tidal River, Victoria

Wilsons Promontory is the southernmost point of mainland Australia, a granite peninsula about three hours south-east of Melbourne via Foster, where Victorians have shortened the name to simply the Prom. Tidal River is the only real settlement, a campground, general store and visitor centre set behind a calm beach at the park's accessible northern end, and almost everything south of it is wilderness: boulder-strewn headlands, rainforest gullies and a scatter of beaches that only overnight hikers ever reach. Squeaky Beach, a short walk from Tidal River, gets its name from quartz sand that genuinely squeaks underfoot, and Mount Oberon's short, steep summit walk gives one of the best views in Victoria for the effort involved. The multi-day Great Prom Walk links Sealers Cove, Refuge Cove and Waterloo Bay along the coast before looping back inland, and a lighthouse built in the 1850s still stands at the peninsula's southern tip. Common wombats graze openly near the Tidal River car park at dusk, and the whole park sits exposed to Bass Strait weather that can turn within the hour.

The park itself has no closing gate and is accessible around the clock, though the entrance boom gate near Tidal River is sometimes closed overnight in the off season. The Tidal River general store, cafe and visitor centre keep daytime hours that shrink outside the September to April season, and some facilities close altogether for short periods in deep winter - confirm what is open before a winter trip. Overnight hiking on the Great Prom Walk requires a booked permit and a fixed campsite itinerary, not a casual start whenever you arrive. The Mount Oberon summit road sometimes runs a seasonal shuttle bus rather than private cars at peak times, and the Wilsons Promontory Lighthouse is reached only by a long walk or a licensed tour, never by vehicle.
