Wind Cave National Park
National Park · Hot Springs, South Dakota
Established by Theodore Roosevelt on 3 January 1903 as the sixth national park in the United States and the first cave anywhere in the world to be given national park status. Approximately ninety-five per cent of the world's discovered boxwork - thin calcite fins standing out from the rock in a honeycomb - is in this cave. Above it lies one of the few surviving stretches of mixed-grass prairie, with bison, elk and a large prairie dog town.
