Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway

Wyoming Scenic Byway · Thermopolis, Wyoming

A drive of about 34 miles between Shoshoni and Thermopolis where US 20 and the railway squeeze through a canyon cut by the Wind River through the Owl Creek Mountains, with walls rising a couple of thousand feet and road tunnels at the southern end near Boysen Dam. Roadside signs name each rock layer and its age as you pass, from very old granite at the bottom to younger sediments near the top. Near Thermopolis, at a spot called the Wedding of the Waters, the Wind River becomes the Bighorn. The canyon floor is on the Wind River Reservation, so fishing and rafting need tribal permits or a licensed outfitter.
