Winnipeg Beach

A Historic Beach Resort On Lake Winnipeg Once Served By The Moonlight Special Train, With A Long Sandy Beach, A Boardwalk, A Harbour, A Small Casino Era Midway History And Manitoba'S Busiest Summer Shoreline. A Family Beach Town A Short Drive From The City · Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba

Winnipeg Beach is a lake town and provincial park on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg, roughly 55 km north of the city on Highway 9, a drive of about 50 minutes (confirm). Its name comes from the early 1900s, when the Moonlight Special train carried thousands of city people north on summer evenings to a midway, a dance hall and a long sandy beach, and for decades it was the great summer playground of Manitoba. The rides are gone, but the wide beach, the boardwalk, the harbour with its fishing boats and a row of ice cream stands, cafes and summer cottages still make it a lively family stop for a day out from the city. Lake Winnipeg is vast, shallow near shore and cold, with waves that can build fast in a north wind and algae that sometimes arrives in late summer, so swimmers check the notices. Winter is quiet, with most shops and stands closed and only a few walkers on the shore (confirm all hours, prices and dates).

Winnipeg Beach is an open town, so the beach, boardwalk and harbour can be walked at any hour of the year, and the best use is in daylight from late June to early September. Cafes, ice cream stands, the harbour services and any seasonal market keep their own hours, which run longer from late spring to early autumn and shorten or close in winter, so confirm before you drive. Lifeguard cover and beach washrooms are seasonal and may run only on warm weekends. Parking near the boardwalk fills by late morning on hot days. Water advisories can close or discourage swimming at short notice.
