Winterville Mounds

National Historic Landmark · Greenville, Mississippi

A Mississippian ceremonial centre near Greenville, occupied from roughly 1000 to 1450, where twelve of an original twenty-three mounds survive around a plaza — including a temple mound of about fifty-five feet that is among the largest in the lower Mississippi valley. It was a religious and political centre rather than a town: the evidence suggests very few people actually lived on it, and that the population came in from the surrounding countryside for ceremonies. It is a National Historic Landmark with a small state museum on site, and the descendants of the people who built it are the Tunica, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Natchez.

2415 Highway 1 North, Greenville, Mississippi, 38703, United States

A Mississippi Department of Archives and History site. Grounds generally open daily during daylight; the museum keeps a reduced week, closing some weekdays and on state holidays — verify before travelling. Free or a small museum admission.
