Wisconsin Maritime Museum and the USS Cobia

National Historic Landmark (USS Cobia) · Manitowoc, Wisconsin

A maritime museum on the Manitowoc River with a Second World War submarine moored alongside it, telling a story most Americans do not know: Manitowoc, five hundred miles from any ocean, built twenty-eight submarines for the Pacific war and floated them down the Mississippi on barges to New Orleans. The USS Cobia, a Gato-class boat launched in 1943, is a National Historic Landmark, and you can walk the full length of her — or book a bunk and sleep aboard overnight, which is the thing this museum is known for.

75 Maritime Drive, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, 54220, United States

Open daily 9:00 to 17:00, year-round. General admission includes a self-guided walk-through of the USS Cobia. Diving Deeper veteran-led tours and the overnight aboard-the-submarine programme are booked separately and in advance; the overnight sells out well ahead.
