Wisconsin State Capitol

National Historic Landmark · Madison, Wisconsin

Wisconsin's fifth capitol, completed in 1917 on the isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona, at the centre of a street plan that radiates from it in six directions. It stands 284 feet to the top of the gilded bronze figure Wisconsin, which the state notes is about three feet shorter than the dome of the United States Capitol — a comparison Wisconsin has been making for a century. The interior is finished in forty-three varieties of stone from eight countries, and free guided tours run every day of the year.
