Wolf's Lair
Hitler'S First Eastern Front Headquarters, A Bunker Complex Hidden In The Forest From 1941. The Site Of The Failed 20 July 1944 Bomb Plot By Claus Von Stauffenberg. Blown Up By The Retreating Germans In January 1945 And Left As Concrete Ruins · Ketrzyn, Warmian-Masurian
Wolf's Lair (Wilczy Szaniec) was Adolf Hitler's first military headquarters on the Eastern Front, built in the Gierloz forest from 1940 and used from June 1941, when Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Hitler spent most of the next three years here. On 20 July 1944 Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg left a bomb in the conference barrack in a failed attempt to kill him. In January 1945 the retreating Germans blew up the complex, and today about 80 structures remain as broken concrete among pines, some with walls several metres thick. The ruins are real but unlabelled in places and heavily overgrown, so the site rewards reading or a guide more than a quick look. It is a place of history rather than scenery, and the plaque for the plot and the marked bunkers of Hitler, Goering and Keitel are the main stops. The Masurian Lakes lie nearby but are a separate trip. It is a sober site that records a regime responsible for war and genocide, not an attraction to celebrate.

The site is commonly open every day of the year, including most public holidays, from morning until around dusk, with longer hours in summer and shorter ones in winter. The ticket booth closes before the site does, so arrive at least an hour before closing. There is no free entry to the bunker area on foot, a ticket is needed all year, though the car park and the road in the forest are open to anyone. Nothing is closed on a fixed weekday, but part of the buildings, the museum corner and the cafe may shut in deep winter or in very bad weather. Guided tours run on request or at set times in high season; confirm hours, tour languages and current prices before travelling, since seasonal changes are common and I cannot give exact times.
