Wooden Churches of Southern Lesser Poland

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Wooden Churches Of Southern Little Poland (2003). Six Medieval And Early Modern Timber Churches With Painted Interiors And Shingled Roofs, Among Them Binarowa And Debno. Small Villages, Small Churches, Easy To Miss And Best Done By Car On A Day Out From Krakow · Binarowa, Lesser Poland

Six timber churches in villages south and east of Krakow, inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 as the Wooden Churches of Southern Little Poland: Binarowa, Debno, Lipnica Murowana, Haczow, Sekowa and Blizne. They date from the late Middle Ages to the 16th century and are built of larch and fir, with steep shingled roofs and painted interiors. Haczow is among the largest Gothic timber churches in Europe. The interiors, with bright polychrome walls and ceilings, are the reward for the trip. Most are parish churches still in use, so services come first, and many open only when a key-holder or guide is found, so ring ahead. The route is best done by car from Krakow on a long day, as buses are thin. This suits quiet, church-minded travellers who like architecture and back roads. It does not suit anyone expecting big sights: the churches are small, the villages sleepy, and a locked door is a real possibility.

These are working parish churches, not museums, so there are no fixed visiting hours. Some open for a guided visit on set days in summer, commonly mid-morning to late afternoon, and may be closed on Mondays. Many are kept locked and opened by a key-holder or parish contact, whose number is often on the door or the parish website, so ring ahead. During Mass, usually Sunday morning, and on feast days, visits are not allowed or must be silent at the back. Exteriors and church grounds are free to see at any time, but interiors may be closed. Confirm opening, key arrangements and service times for each church close to your date.
