Woodlawn Cemetery
Historic Site · Bronx, New York
Four hundred acres of Bronx parkland laid out in 1863 as a rural cemetery, and ⚠ A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK holding one of the greatest concentrations of funerary architecture in America — mausoleums by McKim, Mead and White, Carrère and Hastings, John Russell Pope and Tiffany Studios. ⚠ DUKE ELLINGTON, MILES DAVIS, HERMAN MELVILLE, CELIA CRUZ AND FIORELLO LA GUARDIA ARE ALL HERE.
517 East 233rd Street, Bronx, New York, 10470, United States
⚠ FREE TO WALK IN. Open daily, generally from around 8:30 a.m. to dusk with shorter winter hours — ⚠ FOUR HUNDRED ACRES OF WINDING DRIVES IS DISORIENTING, so take the free map at the gate and note the closing time. Guided tours are ticketed and run on a published schedule; ⚠ THE JAZZ TOUR IS THE ONE TO PRIORITISE and it books ahead. Driving through the cemetery is permitted and is the practical option for many visitors. ⚠ IT IS A WORKING CEMETERY WITH DAILY BURIALS — visit respectfully. Woodlawn on the 4 and Metro-North's Woodlawn station are both at the gate.
