Woody Point is a small heritage village of about 300 people on the south shore of Bonne Bay inside Gros Morne National Park, with old wooden houses, a working wharf and a slow pace (confirm figures). First settled in the nineteenth century, it grew from a fishing and trading harbour into a village of painted merchant houses and a theatre. Above it rise the Tablelands, and the Discovery Centre on the hill gives the clearest account of why the rock here lies in the open. The village is also known for a summer literary festival, Writers at Woody Point, which brings authors and readers together (confirm dates). A small passenger ferry crosses the bay to Norris Point in summer, which saves the long drive around (confirm). The road in is Highway 431, which branches south from Highway 430 at Wiltondale, and the village is the quietest base for the south side of the park. Rooms are few, so book ahead in festival week.
