Worthington State Forest and Mount Tammany
Mountain Peak · Columbia, New Jersey
The New Jersey shoulder of the Delaware Water Gap — six and a half thousand acres of steep hardwood forest where the Delaware River has cut a thousand-foot notch through the Kittatinny Ridge. MOUNT TAMMANY IS 1,527 FEET AND THE VIEW FROM ITS BARE ROCK SUMMIT DOWN INTO THE GAP, WITH MOUNT MINSI FACING IT ACROSS THE WATER IN PENNSYLVANIA, IS THE MOST RECOGNISABLE LANDSCAPE IN NEW JERSEY. The Red Dot Trail climbs twelve hundred feet in about a mile and a half of loose rock and it is far harder than its length suggests. The Appalachian Trail runs the ridge behind it to Sunfish Pond, a glacial lake and one of the state's genuine natural wonders.
