Wright Brothers National Memorial
Memorial · Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina
The place where powered flight began, on the sand at Kill Devil Hills, on the morning of 17 December 1903 - four flights, the longest of them 852 feet in 59 seconds. Wilbur and Orville Wright came here from Dayton, Ohio, because the US Weather Bureau told them the winds were steady and because it was remote enough to work in private. A sixty-foot granite monument, more than two thousand tons of it, was dedicated on Kill Devil Hill in 1932, and the four flight distances are marked with stones out on the flat where the machine actually left the ground.
