Wulong Karst (Three Natural Bridges)
UNESCO World Heritage Site (South China Karst, 2007); National 5A Tourist Attraction · Chongqing, Chongqing
A landscape of immense limestone bridges, sinkholes, caves and slot canyons in the mountains southeast of Chongqing, part of the UNESCO South China Karst World Heritage site. Its centrepiece, the Three Natural Bridges, is a chain of colossal rock arches spanning a deep gorge, each rising more than 200 metres above the valley floor, formed where the roofs of an ancient cave system collapsed. Visitors descend by lift into the gorge and walk beneath the arches past waterfalls and giant collapsed sinkholes, and past a reconstructed Tang-dynasty post station built as a set for Zhang Yimou's film Curse of the Golden Flower; the scenery also appeared in Transformers: Age of Extinction. Nearby, Furong Cave is one of China's finest show caves, filled with crystal flowers, curtains and pools, and Longshuixia Fissure Gorge is a narrow slot canyon threaded with walkways, waterfalls and a glass lift. In winter the high meadows of Fairy Mountain turn white for skiing, and evening performances of Impression Wulong tell the story of the boat haulers of the rivers. A high-speed line opened in 2025 now brings Wulong within an hour of Chongqing.
