Wupatki National Monument
National Monument · Flagstaff, Arizona
Red sandstone pueblos scattered across open grassland north of Flagstaff, built mostly in the 1100s by ancestors of Hopi and other Pueblo peoples. Wupatki Pueblo, with about a hundred rooms, stands beside a ballcourt and a natural blowhole that breathes air in and out of the ground; Wukoki, Lomaki and the Citadel rise from rock outcrops along the road. It shares a 34-mile loop road with Sunset Crater Volcano, whose eruption in the 1000s is thought to have shaped settlement here. Views run to the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks. The loop road also crosses lava flows and cinder fields from the Sunset Crater eruption.
